This 8x10 inch original watercolor was inspired by standing inside the actual studio of Paul Cézanne at the Atelier des Lauves in Aix-en-Provence.
I began by sketching directly inside the studio itself, absorbing the quiet, the filtered Provençal light, and the arrangement of objects that Cézanne famously painted again and again. The hats on the wall, the draped coat, the sturdy wooden furniture, the pottery, and the fruit bowls all speak to a working artist’s life frozen in time.
This piece blends ink line with expressive watercolor washes to capture both structure and atmosphere, my nod to Cézanne’s disciplined draftsmanship and his revolutionary approach to form and color. The warm earth tones and layered marks reflect the studio’s preserved stillness, while the loose brushwork keeps the painting alive and contemporary.
It is both a study of place and a quiet artistic pilgrimage.

Why This Piece Is Special:
The Atelier des Lauves is where Cézanne created many of his late masterpieces and still-life explorations that helped shape modern art. A few years ago I spent time in the Aix region retracing Cezanne's steps and the places where he painted. To stand in that space is to feel the weight of repetition, study, and devotion to craft. I spent time sketching and drawing in his studio. It felt special to be working on my art in the same space where he made his art.
This painting captures the working rhythm of an artist who changed the course of painting. With his coat slung across a chair and his hat hanging by the back door it feels like Cezanne has stepped out for a few minutes and will return shortly.
